Music

Unit 1: Beat and Rhythm

Beat is the heartbeat of music! In this unit, we focus on finding and keeping a steady beat, then we layer different rhythms on top of it. This unit involves reading, improvising, and composing rhythms.

Unit 2: Melody and Harmony

When you read, you begin with A-B-C; when you sing, you begin with Do-Re-Mi! We explore the world of pitch, both high and low. We discover what makes a melody, and we learn how to sing and sign solfege, so we can compose our own tunes!

Unit 3: Movement and Expression

Music can make us feel happy, sad, or even scared! We explore the tools that composers use to evoke specific emotions in their songs, including dynamics, tempo, and articulation. We discover how to express what we hear and feel through the way we move our bodies.

Unit 4: Form and Timbre

In this unit, we learn about the different instruments and their families. We develop and expand the vocabulary we use to describe sound. We also notice how songs are made up of phrases and sections that repeat, and we identify some of the many forms a piece of music can take.
